Opened in 2006, Metro Vein Centers is a national leader in minimally-invasive treatments of Venous Insufficiency and its consequences: Varicose Veins, Spider Veins, Stasis Dermatitis, and Venous Ulcers.

Treatments for Venous Disease
Metro Vein Centers uses only safe, conservative treatment techniques to guarantee patient safety and satisfaction.
RADIO FREQUENCY ABLATION (RFA)
- In the early 2000s, minimally invasive thermo-ablation techniques became the standard of care for venous insufficiency.
- During thermo-ablations, a catheter is inserted into the vein emitting a high energy source which results in vein collapse and closure.
- The body then naturally absorbs the dead tissue and the blood flow is rerouted to healthy veins.
- The radiofrequency catheter delivers a 120°C beam.
ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA)
- Endovenous Laser Ablation is the other major thermo-ablation technique.
- RFA and EVLA follow the same operating protocol.
- The laser fiber delivers a heat beam reaching up to 700°C.
- Numerous studies demonstrated similar closure rates for RFA and EVLA.
- Sclerotherapy induces vein wall damage in a controlled fashion by injecting a sclerosant foam (polidocanol or sodium tetradecyl sulfate) into the vein. This results in fibrosis in the vessel and obliteration of the varicose vein.
- Sclerotherapy is appropriate for the treatment of smaller vessels and spider veins. At Metro Vein Centers, this technique is only used as a complement to thermo-ablations for the treatment of superficial veins.
- Phlebectomy consists in the removal of superficial diseased vessels through multiple tiny incisions.
- It is performed under local anesthesia.
- This technique is used at Metro Vein Centers to treat smaller veins as a complement to thermo-ablations of the large varicose veins.

Prevention Through Lifestyle Changes
In the 5 to 10 years following successful treatment, new veins can become diseased and require treatment. In order to prevent new varicose veins, we encourage patients to:
- Avoid standing or sitting for long periods without taking a break. When sitting, avoid crossing your legs. Keep legs raised when sitting, resting, or sleeping.
- Physical activities to get legs moving and improve muscle tone. This helps blood move through the veins.
- If overweight, weight loss is advisable. This will improve blood flow and ease the pressure on the veins.
- Avoid wearing tight clothes, especially those that are tight around your waist, groin (upper thighs), and legs. Tight clothes can sometimes worsen varicose veins.
- Avoid wearing high heels for long periods. However, lower heeled shoes can help tone your calf muscles. Toned muscles help blood move through the veins.
