Varicose Veins vs. Spider Veins

Varicose and Spider Veins are often confused by patients. Although both can be unsightly, varicose veins are typically associated with venous disease – however spider veins are usually a cosmetic issue.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen, bulging, abnormally enlarged veins that protrude from the surface of the skin. They typically have a twisted, rope or cord-like appearance and are blue or dark purple in color.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous Laser Treatment is a minimally invasive technique for treating varicose veins usings lasers guided by ultrasound. EVLT is a 45 minute procedure, that requires only local anethesia, and is performed right in the office. Metro Vein Centers is an experienced and leading vein center providing EVLT.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins and occur near the surface of the skin, but are small and threadlike. They often look like spider webs or tree branches, and can be red, blue, or purplish in color.

Sclerotherapy is considered the standard for treating spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a medicated sclerosing solution into the affected blood vessels, causing the veins to close down and reabsorbed into the body. The procedure takes about ten minutes to perform. Multiple sessions may be required for a complete, cosmetic result.
